Egg Vitrification Services

This service is available to women wishing to delay having children until a later date, and wish to consider freezing their eggs.  Icon More information. (60.0 KB)

Egg vitrification refers to the process whereby eggs are rapidly frozen to be used for assisted conception treatments at a later date.

WHY CHOOSE EGG VITRIFICATION?

Egg Vitrification prevents the formation of damaging ice crystals

Until recently, the only method of egg freezing involved a slow freezing process. However, this process was not successful since ice crystals can form within the egg that can destroy the cell’s structure.

To overcome this, Egg Vitrification involves dehydrating the eggs and using a specialised freezing technique, which freezes eggs so quickly that ice crystals are prevented from forming.

Egg Vitrification can preserve fertility for cancer patients and combat age related infertility

The use of vitrification technology provides an option for cancer patients looking to preserve their fertility.

And, recent studies have proclaimed that egg freezing can be used to combat age-related infertility – eggs frozen from younger years can theoretically used years later during IVF treatment.

EGG VITRIFICATION PROCEDURE

Before treatment begins you will need to be screened for infectious diseases including HIV, Hepatitis B and C. You will also need to give written consent for your eggs to be stored.

The collected egg is first placed into a bath with lower concentration anti-freeze, along with sucrose to help dehydrate the egg. The egg is then transferred to a bath with higher concentrated anti-freeze for less than a minute, while being instantaneously frozen before being stored in liquid nitrogen.

When it is time to thaw the egg, it must be warmed quickly and removed from the anti-freeze right away. Once thawed, the egg can be fertilized using ICSI.
