Writing for Business Insider, Ellie Kincaid discusses an important but often overlooked aspect of IVF treatment – that success is by no means guaranteed.
Looking at various statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, Kincaid reveals that the majority of IVF attempts do not result in pregnancy, and and as a woman gets older, the chance of success is reduced.
These trend is widely accepted and the UK’s own IVF regulator, the HFEA, records statistics that tell the same story. But it is important to consider other factors than just success rates. At CREATE, we see IVF treatment as the beginning of the journey, whether treatment is successful or not. A patient of ours is more than just a potential success statistic, they are an individual who requires the best advice and support possible – whatever their decision and whatever the outcome. The health of the patient is at the core of our philosophy, which is why for 15 years we have been leading pioneers in the field of Natural and Mild IVF treatments.
Natural and Mild methods avoid the cocktail of drugs that traditional IVF relies on, thus greatly reducing the possible side effects these treatments can produce. As Kincaid explains, these include “bloating, nausea, throwing up, diarrhea , soreness, and weight gain”, and in extreme circumstances “the ovaries are overstimulated and swell suddenly, which … can cause potentially life-threatening blood clots.” These are all symptoms of OHSS, a condition which Professor Nargund deliberately set out to prevent and minimise when founding CREATE Fertility. Why, she asked, should we risk death when we are trying to create life?
Indeed, we are very proud to state that we have never had a case of severe OHSS. So while statistics are an important part of understanding IVF, they are far from the complete picture. Ultimately it will be an individual who decides to undertake fertility treatment, and that treatment will be unique to them and their circumstances. As Kincaid puts it, “data can give women a clear picture of what average success rates for IVF actually are, but can’t possibly predict what will happen for each individual patient”. That’s why at CREATE we offer a dedicated and highly experienced team who put your health first, individualise treatment and are with you every step of the way.
