Our Medical Director Professor Geeta Nargund has written in the Letters to The Editor section of the Times newspaper regarding the revolution in egg freezing and how it is giving women a real choice. You can read the full extract below -
Modern techniques have given a real choice to women in the preservation of their fertility, Professor Geeta Nargund says
Sir, Lord Winston and incomplete data collection from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) have misled women about their fertility options with egg freezing (“Top clinics exploiting women who freeze eggs”, report, Sept 12). Drawing on out-of-date HFEA data, Winston has provided a misleading account of current egg freezing techniques.
The science of egg freezing has undergone a revolution over the past few years as clinics have switched from a slow freezing process to vitrification, a process that significantly increases the chances of eggs surviving the freezing and thawing process. The HFEA data currently makes no distinction between slow freezing and vitrification, and the key statistics quoted for outcomes represent what egg freezing was in the past and not what it is now. These statistics cannot be relied upon as the technology has moved on and success rates have significantly improved.
Furthermore, the data quoted do not give age-related success rates for egg freezing. The age of eggs at the time of freezing determines the success of egg freezing. It is meaningless to give success rates without quoting the age of the woman at the time of freezing.
The reality is that modern techniques of egg freezing have given a real choice to women in the preservation of their fertility.
